This is all a bit odd. Suddenly there are no Breakers this week meaning there’s only eight acts in total on this particular TOTP. Added to that, the show is totally male dominated with no female artists on it at all and lastly the running order has been split right down the middle with the first four performances all by solo artists and the last four by bands.

The first of those solo artists is Haddaway with his hit single “Life”. What can you say about this guy? No, seriously. What else is there to say about him that I haven’t already said in previous posts? The ‘hadaway and shite’ reference? Done. That I couldn’t stand “What Is Love”? Tick. My opinion that “Life” was just a retread of its predecessor? Case stated. That in 2008 he teamed up with Dr. Alban to record a single called “I Love The 90s”? Yep…no wait…what?! No! Hell that sounds horrendous and guess what? It is horrendous! Look at this…

Dear God! That such a thing could be allowed to exist! Host Tony Dortie said of Haddaway after his performance “that man is out to lunch”. Not sure what his reasoning was for that assessment but having listened to “I Love The 90s” I conclude that he must have been a sandwich short of a picnic to record that nonsense. “Life” peaked at No 6.

Talking of Dortie, he then goes onto to tell some inane anecdote about how he once asked Meatloaf how he got his name. Tony…mate…just stick to the basics eh? So, after being previewed on the show what feels like an age ago (it was actually six weeks which does seem an extraordinarily long lead time), the single that would sell more than any other in the UK in 1993 is finally here. Surely nobody could have seen this coming?! Before “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”, the last time Meatloaf had been in the UK Top 40 was in 1986 when he teamed up with John “St.Elmo’s Fire” Parr for the No 31 hit “Rock ‘n’ Roll Mercenaries”. His last completely solo hit had been 1984’s “Modern Girl”. How did he stage this incredible comeback? Well, he went back to his roots and when you understand that strategy then maybe his resurgence wasn’t quite the shock that I’ve made it out to be.

The 1977 “Bat Out Of Hell” album has sold 42 million copies worldwide so it was pretty much a no-brainer that an album called “Bat Out Of Hell II” would stack up some serious sales if ever released. Reunited with song writing partner Jim Steinman (the two had fallen out so badly that they ended up suing each other in the 80s), an official follow up to Meatloaf’s best known work was recorded with the official title “Bat Out Of Hell II: Back Into Hell”. Whilst Steinman protested it was all about the art and wanting to revisit the world of “Bat Out Of Hell” and explore it deeper, Meatloaf let the truth out about what they were really doing with this quote:

“We called it Bat Out Of Hell II ‘cos that would help it sell shitloads”

And so it did. The album went to No 1 in every territory on the planet and would rack up 14 million sales. The lead single did just as well going to No 1 in 28 different countries and was certified platinum in the US. It will be at No 1 in the UK soon enough in these TOTP repeats and for seven weeks so I’ll keep my powder dry for fear of a flood of commentary early on. Hmm…”I’ll Keep My Powder Dry (For Fear Of A Flood)”…if only Meatloaf or Jim Steinman were still alive…

Next a man making his last ever appearance on TOTP. Paul Young was first on the show back in 1978 (!) as part of Streetband performing novelty hit “Toast” but he became a regular from 1983 onwards as a star in his own right with massive hits like “Wherever I Lay My Hat”, “Come Back And Stay” and “Love Of The Common People”. The hits and therefore trips to the TOTP studios continued for a couple of more years before the orbit of his time as a pop idol began to wane but he caught his falling star in time to collect a handful of hits (and some more TOTP turns) and a No 1 Best Of album in the early 90s.

However, as Paul himself once sang, “Everything Must Change” and so it came to pass that the fame game was up come October 1993 as Paul served up one final TOTP outing for us. What a shame then that it was such a lacklustre performance. To start with, the set was awful. Some dry ice and some long curtains behind him were all Paul had to work with and with a total lack of detail on the behalf of the TOTP producers, they were red! He’s literally singing a song called “Now I Know What Made Otis Blue”! Sure that’s ‘blue’ as in mood not colour but even so! Secondly, there’s the sad spectacle of Paul’s vocals. Now either he had a bit of a sore throat on this particular day or it was a resumption of the vocal chords problems that he suffered from throughout his career but this isn’t the best singing he’s ever done in his life. What a shame to bow out on a bum note. Thanks for the good times Paul.

What are the chances? From one male solo artist making his final TOTP appearance to another immediately afterwards. As far as I can tell, this is the last time we’ll be seeing Billy Joel on the BBC’s flagship music show as his only UK Top 40 hit after “All About Soul” came in 2010 when “She’s Always A Woman” re-entered the charts but TOTP had been axed four years prior to that.

This was the follow up to his surprisingly successful “River Of Dreams” single which had made the Top 3 over the Summer. It’s pretty standard Billy fodder although there’s a nice sentiment behind the lyrics:

Aah. There’s lovely. Belief and faith in each other. Billy even sings these lyrics in the song – “She gives me all the live I need to keep my faith alive” about his wife Christie Brinkley who painted the picture on the “River Of Dreams” album’s cover. Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley got divorced less than 12 months later. Ah.

We’re onto the groups now starting with a band enjoying a comeback almost as unlikely as Meatloaf’s. Go West were shiny, new pop stars back in 1985 with some catchy tunes and a nice line in singlet vests. Then ‘85 turned into ‘86 and they were yesterday’s news before the clocks had struck twelve. As the 80s came to an end, Go West seemed like a small footnote in the decade’s pop music story but then came what seemed like one final swan song with a spot on the Pretty Woman soundtrack that gave the duo a hit with “King Of Wishful Thinking”. That was surely them done but no. Two years later came a gold selling album in “Indian Summer” and two Top 20 singles. OK but then nothing yeah? Full stop! The end. Erm…no. Buoyed by that success, a Greatest Hits album was put together (“Aces And Kings – The Best Of Go West”) and to promote it came this, a cover version of “Tracks Of My Tears” by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles. Sacrilege? Maybe. Was it terrible? It could have been worse but anybody would lose up against the original.

By the way, ever wondered whether the TOTP hosts were really that enthusiastic about all the acts on the show they were introducing or did they keep their true opinions to themselves back then? Here’s Tony Dortie with the answer:

Ouch! Well, Tony would game been pleased to know that Go West would only have one more chart entry, a remix of their very first hit “We Close Our Eyes” which made No 40 but, like Paul Young earlier, remain very active on the live nostalgia circuit. Oh, one final thing; is that Jaki Graham on backing vocals duties?

Right, a good, solid, proper band now as Crowded House return with “Distant Sun”, the lead single from their fourth studio album “Together Alone”. After achieving some long overdue mainstream success in this country with previous album “Woodface” and its attendant singles, expectations must have been high for more of the same from the band’s record label Capitol. Sales of “Together Alone” didn’t quite live up to said expectations (selling roughly half of what its predecessor did) but still went platinum in the UK and made No 4 on the album chart. Like “Woodface”, five singles were released from it but none better I think than “Distant Sun” which is well crafted with some gorgeous melodies but also a change of pace and streak of defiance in the coda with the lyric “Like a Christian fearing vengeance from above” to the fore.

By this point Tim Finn had left the band and was replaced by Mark Hart and it got me thinking about the band’s various line up changes, their Split Enz origins, the tragedy of a drummer Paul Hester’s death, their split and reformation – some film director should really make a biopic to tell their story. Maybe one day. “Distant Sun” peaked at No 19.

OK. Calling this next lot a band might be stretching the definition a little but here they are anyway – it’s Right Said Fred with “Bumped”. Strange as it may seem to recall, the Freds had experienced phenomenal commercial success in the previous two years. A chart topping album and hit singles that went to positions 1, 2 and 3 in their first year plus a No 4 Comic Relief single from earlier in 1993. Only the single “Those Simple Things/Daydream” had let the side down when it peaked at No 29.

As such, the difficult second album syndrome approached. Could the lads push on through and establish themselves as more than just a comedy act? The answer was a resounding no. Sophomore album “Sex And Travel” flopped and of the singles taken from it, only one made the Top 40 and even then peaked at a lowly No 32. That was this track “Bumped” and it really is as weak as Matt Hancock’s claim that he’s doing I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here to promote his dyslexia campaign. We see you Hancock. Anyway, the band were clearly under orders to promote themselves as more than a gimmick with Richard Fairbrass stating to the TOTP studio audience that “Bumped” was “more groovy than Stick It Out”. Now granted the track had a bit more musicality to it than something like “I’m Too Sexy” but it was hardly “Off The Wall” era Michael Jackson now was it?

Having commented on Paul Young’s wavering vocals earlier, I must now say something about Fairbrass’s singing. And I say this – the guy can’t really sing can he? Sure he can deliver a song but sing? Not so much. Right Said Fred would bag one final UK Top 40 hit in 2001 with the jokey “You’re My Mate” before embarking on a career as Covid deniers and anti-vaxxers.

Get ready to scream! Take That are straight in at No 1 with their collaboration with Lulu on “Relight My Fire”. The band broke all sorts of records and had No 1 singles coming out of their ears but the truth is that in their first incarnation up to 1996, they released more videos (seven) than they did studio albums (three) so it seems to me that they were definitely being promoted visually to a young audience over their actual music. It made sense to I guess. Just an observation.

TOTP 21 JAN 1993

There’s a new president in the White House as the day before this TOTP aired, Bill Clinton was sworn in as the 42nd POTUS. I can’t really think about Clinton without this coming to mind…

And then this of course…

Politicians lying. Fast forward thirty odd years and literally nothing has changed. If anything, it’s got worse. And that’ll do for the intro this time. I’ve done a few lengthy ones lately so I’m due a more succinct start to a post.

We start the show with yet another 70s disco revival. After Boney M and their recent megamix single and Greatest Hits album returned them to the charts for the first time in well over a decade, now strode Sister Sledge straight into the Top 10. What was going on?

The last time we saw the sisters in the UK charts was eight years previous with a No 1 hit that was, for me, one of the worst hits of…well…ever. I refer of course to the execrable “Frankie”, a song so bad that it didn’t just stink the place out but dissolved its foundations with its foul stench. After that inexplicable chart topper, nothing, zip, nada. And then this comeback with a remix of 1979 hit and their signature tune “We Are Family”. Entitled the ‘Sure Is Pure Remix’, this is was to promote, like the aforementioned Boney M, a Greatest Hits compilation simply called “The Very Best Of Sister Sledge 1973-93”. Well, I guess you couldn’t blame their record label for wanting a piece of the retro action but this wasn’t the first time that there’d been a Sister Sledge revival. Back in 1984, Chic remixes of “Lost In Music” and “We Are Family” had graced the Top 40 to the tune of Nos 4 and 33 respectively yet here they were back again for another go. It seems you really can’t keep a good tune down and “We Are Family” is a good tune no doubt. The 1993 version peaked at No 5 and inevitably led to a follow up which was a re-release of, yes of course, “Lost In Music”. A bit less obviously there was a final rerelease of their 1984 hit “Thinking Of You” which would give the group their third hit single of the year.

As for the performance here, the first thing that I noticed is that there’s only three of the group on stage immediately rendering untrue the lyrics “I got all my sisters with me”. I’ve tried to work out who is there and who is missing. Kathy is definitely doing the lead vocals and I think that’s Kim and Debbie up there with her meaning it’s Joni who was missing (I think). Was it Joni who did most of the singing on “Frankie”? Sadly Joni passed away in 2017 but the group is still going via the family’s next generation as the sisters’ kids are now involved. Their website welcomes visitors with the intro:

They’ve copyrighted the word ‘sledgendary’. Excellent!

It’s the 40-11 chart rundown next over the top of the video for Faith No More’s cover of “Easy” by the Commodores or “I’m Easy” as they have inexplicably taken it upon themselves to retitle it. The band are on record as saying that even though their version is very faithful, the video featuring some transvestites shows that they were ‘up to something’ in their decision to record it and that it was all very tongue in cheek. Was it the case then that they were trying to subvert and expose the mechanisms of the music industry by releasing the song and were in fact some sort of US version of The KLF?! I’m not sure I get nor am buying this.

“I’m Easy” peaked at No 3 in the UK but was only a minor hit in the US where it stuck at No 58. Cultural differences and all that.

Here’s a thing. I would never have thought that there was a connection between UK blue eyed soul merchants Go West and US West Coast rapper 2Pac but there is and it’s this song called “What You Won’t Do For Love”. Nothing to do with Meatloaf and his similar sounding single that would be the year’s best seller, this was actually a cover version (another one) of a 1978 track written by US singer-song writer Bobby Caldwell.

The 2Pac connection is courtesy of it being sampled for posthumous single “Do For Love” whist Go West recorded it for their “Indian Summer” album.

Peter Cox and Richard Drummie were on a bit of a roll come 1993. This was their third Top 20 hit on the bounce after “King Of Wishful Thinking” and “Faithful”. Who could have predicted that when the hits had dried up in the late 80s? I’m surprised it was a hit though as the duo’s version is a real plodder and sounds lumpen next to the original. To be honest I’m more drawn to their backing band than the song. There’s a sax player who looks like Eric Catchpole from Lovejoy and a guy on keyboards who resembles Just Good Friends actor and “Dancing With The Captain” hitmaker Paul Nicholas.

Go West saw out 1993 with two more UK hits both taken from their Best Of collection “Aces And Kings”. Their cover (another one!) of “The Tracks Of My Tears” by The Miracles reached No 16 whilst a re-release of debut hit “We Close Our Eyes” just scraped in at No 40. The band gave never returned to the UK charts since.

Snap! are waiting on the next stage to perform their hit “Exterminate!”. They were really keen on the use of exclamation marks weren’t they? I say ‘they’ but this seems to be mostly being promoted as a Niki Haris single if the on screen graphics and host Mark Franklin’s intro are anything to go by. She has had quite the career though. As well as her time with Snap!, she’s toured extensively with Madonna and collaborated with the likes of Anita Baker, Prince, Ray Charles, Tom Jones and Luther Vandross to name but a few. That Billie Holiday tribute thing that Franklin mentions though, well I struggled to find much online about that at all. Was it a film, TV special, album, concert? I found a listing on the BFI database but only scant details about it. Did it ever happen? Maybe it was exterminated? I’ll get me coat.

Yay the Breakers! This is where I have to comment on a load of songs some of which we may only ever get to see/hear for 30 seconds or so. Seems like a good deal. We start with a song for Bill Clinton – “Dogs Of Lust” by The The. Just as I have previously posted about XTC and Prefab Sprout, The The really don’t get the commercial success their catalogue deserves. Not in terms of the charts anyway and with TOTP being a show predominantly based around the Top 40, we rarely got to see them on our screens. I say ‘them’ but I mean Matt Johnson as the band really are basically a vehicle for his creativity.

This single was his first chart hit since 1989’s “The Beat(en) Generation” and only his third ever at the time. It feels wrong to say that “Dogs Of Lust” was typical The The fare as if the word ‘typical’ could ever be applied to Matt Johnson but it was in the respect that it was as uncompromising, startling and in your face a track as everything he does always is. The opening harmonica riff which becomes a repeating refrain is reminiscent of the theme tune from The Old Grey Whistle Test and came courtesy of everyone’s favourite in demand collaborator Johnny Marr.

The track was the lead single from the album “Dusk” which, in a chart statistic that seeks to undermine my earlier claims about lack of commercial success, peaked at No 2. It produced three hit singles in all though none were bigger than “Dogs Of Lust” and its No 25 chart high.

Matt’s next two albums achieved very modest sales and he busied himself with creating film soundtracks as the new millennium dawned though he has recently released a No live album of his comeback gig at the Royal Albert Hall.

I’d totally forgotten that there was a fourth single release from Del Amitri’s “Change Everything” album despite it being the second biggest of the lot with a chart peak of No 20. The title of this one is almost a single by The Jam (“When You’re Young”) and very nearly a Bucks Fizz hit (“When We Were Young”) but “When You Were Young” it was and a pleasant little ditty it was too if a little formulaic.

There had been a gap of five months or so since their last single “Just Like A Man” but that was a marketing strategy decision apparently as “When You Were Young” was kept back to avoid the Xmas rush. I think the plan worked.

Alice In Chains? To quote Roy Chubby Brown, “Who The F**k Is Alice?”. Well, they were one of those grunge bands of course that were meant to flood the UK music scene in the wake of Nirvana but which never really materialised. “Would?” was actually from the soundtrack to the film Singles which I loved but which my friend Robin who I saw it with hated. In essence, it was your basic romantic comedy/ drama but set in Seattle against the backdrop of the grunge movement. Following the love lives of two couples and one single person, its soundtrack featured big grunge hitters like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and of course Alice In Chains as well as alternative rockers like Paul Westerberg and The Smashing Pumpkins. I’m pretty sure I even gave it a play on the shop stereo of the Rochdale Our Price I was working in. “Would?” is a heavy sound that wouldn’t normally have floated my boat but then I had liked “Alive” by Pearl Jam so maybe my tastes were changing back then.

Alice In Chains would rack up a string of minor hits in the UK during the 90s though none as big as “Would?” which peaked at No 19. They also had songs feature on two other films, Arnie’s Last Action Hero and slacker comedy Clerks. Oh, and the reason Robin hated Singles? There’s a character called Steve in it who is a town planner but who used to be a DJ. In a scene in his flat with new girlfriend Linda, they’re perusing his record collection and the vinyl is in PVC sleeves. Even his punk records. This disgusted Robin so much he barely paid any attention to the rest of the film.

A lot of the dance anthems that have featured on these TOTP repeats have failed to ring any bells with me but I do recall “Open Your Mind” by U.S.U.R.A. This piece of Italian techno sampled “New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)” by Simple Minds and was a dance smash around Europe including over here where it peaked at No 7. I even recall that it was on the very hip Deconstruction Records label because it had that generic red and yellow single cover with a band looping a ‘d’ and ‘c’ together.

The face morphing video caused a bit of a stir not for its effects – it was no “Black And White” – but because of the faces chosen which included Joe McCarthy, Benito Mussolini, Richard Nixon, Ian Paisley, Ronald Reagan, Josef Stalin, Margaret Thatcher and Mary Whitehouse. Interestingly no Bill Clinton though.

Now to a very underrated band with a song that’s actually a bit of a banger in a very understated way. The Beloved had come to popular attention in late ‘89/early ‘90 with the hit singles “The Sun Rising” and “Hello” and an album “Happiness” which gained positive reviews for its fusion of house and pop music. Fast forward three years and the band had been through a seismic shift with founding member Steve Waddington having left the fold. Remaining original member Jon Marsh replaced him with his wife Helena. Nothing like keeping it in the family eh?

This new line up returned in 1993 with “Sweet Harmony” the lead single from new album “Conscience”. It was still that combination of dance beats and a pop structure on which they’d made their name but this time that sound had been refined right down to the most precise of details. This was so slick that it worked as a club anthem and as a great pop song as substantiated by its Top 10 chart placing. Clearly the TOTP producers didn’t quite know what to do with this genre bending hit as exemplified by that classic default strategy of flooding the stage with dry ice.

However, it wasn’t their appearance on the show that everyone was talking about but rather the single’s accompanying promo video. You know, the nudity one. Yes, the staging of a naked Jon Marsh surrounded by similarly nude women (infamously including then unknown but future TV presenter Tess Daly) was meant to promote the idea of human unity but instead got the likes of the aforementioned Mary Whitehouse outraged at the indecency.

There were at least two people who did like it though…

What was it this week with acts who felt the need to turn their names into faux acronyms. After U.S.U.R.A. earlier, we now have T.H.E. S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M. Didn’t these people realise I’d be writing a blog thirty years later and have to type this nonsense out?!

After being a Breaker last week, this Clivillés and Cole project were in the studio seven days on to perform “It’s Gonna Be A Lovely Day”. Yes, that’s TV’s Michelle Visage up there with the Nosferatu talons and she’s giving me some heavy PM Dawn / “Set Adrift On Memory Bliss” vibes with her rapping style.

Taken from the soundtrack to The Bodyguard, it was already at its No 17 peak which was 13 places lower than the chart high achieved by a Ben Liebrand remix of the Bill Withers original back in 1988.

Now I knew there were at least two singles taken from Def Leppard’s “Adrenalize” album in the odious “Let’s Get Rocked” and “Make Love Like A Man” but I had no idea that it had gifted the world six! “Heaven Is” was the fourth of those and lead singer Joe Elliott is on record as saying the song was ‘more Queen than Queen’ and that the backing vocals sounded like The Beach Boys. Hmm. Let’s have another listen then…

Is this week eight at the top for Whitney Houston and “I Will Always Love You”? I’m losing count now. I’m also running out of things to say about it so instead, here’s Dolly Parton’s original…

Which event do you think of when you hear the word ‘comeback’? Is it a sporting occasion like Liverpool defeating AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final after being 3-0 down at half time? Or perhaps a celebrity comeback like TV and radio presenter Richard Bacon who resurrected his career after being the first *Blue Peter presenter to have their contract terminated mid season after a cocaine use scandal? Or could it be a music themed comeback like Take That’s return in 2006 ten years after they initially called it a day?

*They even made him hand in his Blue Peter badge!

What characterises all of these comebacks? Hard work? Undeniable talent? Plain old dumb luck? Who knows but happen they did and there’s a comeback theme of sorts to this TOTP show. Let’s have a look see as to who was doing the resurrection shuffle…

We start with surely one of the most unlikely of 90s music comebacks from Go West. Actually, I say unlikely but they’d already made one comeback this decade when they popped up out of nowhere in 1990 with the “King Of Wishful Thinking” single from the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Over two years on from that though, surely lightning wouldn’t strike twice for the duo?

Back in 1985, Go West had been one of the pop stories of the year as they clocked up four Top 40 hits including the No 5 hit “We Close Our Eyes”. Following up on that breakthrough success was a harder trick to pull off though and all their subsequent 80s releases failed to make the charts. I for one didn’t think they had another hit in them at that point let alone two but here was another bona fide chart entry in the form of “Faithful”. This sounded like “King Of Wishful Thinking” all over again to me but as if it had been through the wash by accident. All the fun had been removed by pop detergent leaving a starchy replica in its place. More than that though, it sounded so out of kilter with its chart peers. Never mind comeback, this was a real throwback.

“Faithful” was taken from Go West’s third studio album, the suitability named for a comeback theme “Indian Summer” which itself was a surprise No 13 hit. They really were making like Johnny Hates Jazz and turning back the clock. Peter Cox and Richard Drummie look like they’re enjoying themselves in this performance and talking of looking like, doesn’t Drummie resemble actor Stephen Mangan a bit? Just me then.

We’re sticking with this new fangled nostalgia section (can nostalgia be new fangled?!) to celebrate the forthcoming 1,500th TOTP show. This week’s clip from the archives is “You Make Me Feel Like Dancing” by Leo Sayer. Leo was one of those artists who I was aware of from an early age though I didn’t really think of as a pop star as such but more of a light entertainment performer. I think it was him appearing on things like The Muppet Show maybe but he was a bona fide pop star with proper hit songs and everything. He had two consecutive No 1 singles in the US for a start. In a ten year period starting in 1973, he had fourteen chart hits including ten inside the Top 10 of which four went to No 2 and one topped the chart. These were serious numbers. After 1983’s “Orchard Road” peaked at No 16 though, the hits dried up and Leo was deemed irrelevant to the 80s and beyond. Marital and financial problems followed and Sayer’s public profile plummeted.

And then, in 2006, resurrection. A dance version of his song “Thunder In My Heart” by UK DJ Meck entitled “Thunder In My Heart Again” returned the curly haired one to the top of the charts, twenty-nine years after his previous one. That’s how you do a comeback! The single’s success restored Leo to the public eye and he was famous enough once more to bag a slot on Celebrity Big Brother in 2007. Oh. My. God. He was talking about himself in the third person! And the levels of self delusion! I love that he doesn’t seem to pick up on the fact that Benedict isn’t really listening to him at all. Just insane! Leo lost the plot on Day 10 and walked but luckily for him this was the series of the racist bullying scandal involving Jade Goody vs Shilpa Shetty which overshadowed his egotistical nonsense.

Sayer is still at it though and this year sees him taking his The Show Must Go On tour on the road.

No chances of the next act being on the comeback trail as this is only their second ever single! However they do provide a nice little link back to Leo Sayer’s aforementioned revival. I talk of Felix and their hit “It Will Make Me Crazy” with the link being DJ Meck who sampled their first single “Don’t You Want Me” for his 2007 hit “Feels Like Home”.

The performance here looks a bit minimalist compared to the usual dance act turn mainly because there’s no ponytailed dudes behind a bank of keyboards. Instead there’s a guy on a keytar. Nice.

“It Will Make Me Crazy” peaked at No 11.

I don’t think I can make any case for either of these two guys being comeback kings as both had been successful artists for many years before this single hit the charts. Anything that Zucchero released in the past decade had gone to No 1 in his native Italy however his only UK hit was his 1991 duet with Paul Young “Senza Una Donna (Without A Woman)”. As for Luciano Pavarotti, he’d been a renowned operatic tenor for years but had crossed over into the world of popular music via the BBC’s use of his rendition of Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” for their coverage of the 1990 World Cup. The two came together for “Miserere” soon after which went to No 15 in our Top 40. Why was it a hit? Maybe the UK was in the last vestiges of the new found popularity that opera had imprinted on its consciousness following 1990? It did very little for me though.

Checking Zucchero’s Wikipedia entry, the list of artists he has collaborated with is extraordinary. I was scrolling for ages. It includes someone who also appears on this TOTP though I would not have guessed who from the running order for the show.

A definite comeback next from someone we last saw in the UK charts in 1988. Vanessa Paradis had caused quite the controversy when “Joe Le Taxi” made No 3 over here in 1988 mainly because she was just 15 at the time. Rewatching the video for the track, it does seem like it was a lot of fuss about nothing. She was hardly provocatively dressed wearing plain old jeans and a baggy jumper. It seems to be centred around the fact that she gyrated her hips when dancing. Anyway, after that hit there was zip from Vanessa though she continued to have hits in her native France. She also diversified by beginning an acting career and was also doing some modelling famously portraying a bird in a swinging cage in an advert for the fragrance Coco by Chanel.

By 1992, she was in a relationship with Lenny Kravitz who produced her third studio and first English language album. Simply entitled “Vanessa Paradis”, its lead single was “Be My Baby”. Nothing to do with The Ronettes, this was however an uptempo 60s revival with dashing strings and that pastiche sound that was so familiar that you were sure you knew the song already on first hearing.

As for the performance here, the staging seems to have been designed to look classy with the sweeping drapes backdrop but Vanessa herself would have definitely benefited from watching the aforementioned Ronettes in action. She’s ever so stiff and should have copied some of Ronnie Spector’s shimmy moves. As it was, she concentrated on the singing whilst the coordinated moves were left to her backing singers. “Be My Baby” was a sizeable hit all around Europe (No 6 in the UK) but subsequent singles released from the album failed to chart and she has not returned to our Top 40 in the intervening 30 years.

Some Breakers now starting with…oh no…not Michael Bolton again! Look, how many more times is he going to be on the show because that’s how many times my Mikey B secret has a chance of coming out! Either I have to go through it every time he’s on or you’ll have to go back into the blog archives for the full horror of it. And I’m not doing the former so…

He’s back in the charts with a cover version of the Bee Gees song “To Love Somebody” which was the lead single from his album of soul covers called “Timeless: The Classics”. In some territories (more specifically my head) it went by the title of “Money For Old Rope”.

Do you think he just pinched the idea to cover this track off Jimmy Somerville who recorded it to help promote his Best Of album of 1990? I’m just checking the track listing for the album and it includes his treatment of “Reach Out I’ll Be There” by The Four Tops, “You Send Me” by Sam Cooke and, in a startling lack of inspiration and creativity, “Yesterday” by The Beatles, only the most covered song of all time. This guy was just stealing a living wasn’t he?

The Bollers version of “To Love Somebody” peaked at No 16.

And so to that surprising artist that Zucchero collaborated with. Who had money on John Lee Hooker? Well, it was the legendary American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist who performed on the track “Ali d’oro” from the Italian’s 2001 album “Shake”. It was Hooker’s last ever recording before he died in the June of that year.

None of this explains why Hooker was in the UK Top 40 at this time. For the reason, you need look no further than jeans, specifically Lee Jeans as “Boom Boom” was being used to soundtrack their latest ad campaign. Does it count as a comeback? Well, maybe for the song rather than the artist as it was originally recorded in 1961, whilst Hooker also performed it in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers, the only film he ever appeared in.

I knew a tiny bit about John Lee Hooker at this time, mainly due to the specialist music mornings we used to have at Our Price when rock/pop music was not allowed to be played on the shop stereo, only albums from genres like Folk, Country and of course Blues. Hooker’s critically lauded 1989 album “The Healer” would get a spin now and again and then there was his 1991 album “Mr. Lucky” which was a Recommended Release I think. I was hardly an expert but I could hear that “Boom Boom” was a tune Don’t take my word for it though. In 1995 it was included in The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame’s list of ‘The Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll’.

No comeback going on with this one, this was pure, cynical bandwagon jumping with the particular flavour of the month being flogged to death being the craze for singles released off the back of video games. After “Tetris” by Doctor Spin came “Supermarioland” by Ambassadors Of Funk. Based obviously on the Nintendo game featuring that Italian plumber, this one at least had a credible name behind it. Whereas Doctor Spin was an Andrew Lloyd Webber project, Ambassadors Of Funk was the brainchild of DJ, producer and remixer Simon Harris of “Bass (How Low Can You Go)” fame. It was still a pile of shite mind.

The video (if you can call it that) is just dreadful. Filmed at Chessington World Of Adventures, it’s two dancers arseing about with someone in a Super Mario costume. Cheap doesn’t come into it. Ah, I’m done with this already. Game over!

Another comeback! Well, sort of. It’s a song that is resurrected rather than the artist. When Undercover had a massive hit with a danced up version of Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street” just weeks before, the blueprint for creating dance remixes of decidedly rock/pop songs was set. In its wake came this, a cover of “Run To You” by Bryan Adams. After 16 weeks at the top of the charts for “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” the year before, you would have thought we might all have had enough of Bry for a while but Rage proved otherwise. I say Rage but they were known as En-Rage in some European countries due to the pre-existence of a German heavy metal band with that name but it was the shorter moniker that was on the single in the UK.

Now I hated this probably because in my youth I’d bought the original Adams single (No, you f**k off!) but there seems to be a fair amount of online love for it and especially for singer Tony Jackson. Tony’s vocals were in demand as he’d previously performed as back up to the likes of Billy Ocean, Amii Stewart and Paul Young before his moment in the spotlight. Clearly the guy could sing based on this performance but why throw away your talents on such a shite song?! As ever, I was in the minority as sales of the single took it all the way to No 3.

Rage never managed another hit – they tried to repeat the trick with a dance version of “House Of The Rising Sun” by The Animals but it missed the Top 40 completely – whilst Tony Jackson sadly passed away in 2001.

Madonna was hardly in need of a comeback in 1992. Although it had been three years since her last studio album “Like A Prayer”, she’d certainly not been quiet in the intervening years. Her 1990 Best Of album “The Immaculate Collection” achieved mammoth sales in the UK whilst singles like “Justify My Love”, “Rescue Me” and “This Used To Be My Playground” were also big hits. And then came “Erotica”. The album came wrapped in controversy though much of that was generated by the simultaneous release of coffee table book Sex and its provocative images contained within. It would provide Madonna with five UK hit singles and although selling six million copies worldwide, that was half the amount of its predecessor.

My abiding memory of the album is that on the day of its release, I was working in the Our Price in Rochdale and the shop’s central heating had broken down. It was bloody freezing. I could see my breath despite being inside the shop. Consequently, no customers were coming in and the takings were awful. I think we took less than £400 all day which was pitiful in terms of what was expected. I recall putting up a display of “Erotica” in store but it made zero difference to sales. Obviously we played the album in store and I remember thinking that the track “Rain” would make a good choice of single. It was eventually released as the fifth and final single the following year. I knew I should have pursued a career in A&R (OK OK, I’m joking!)

Less of a comeback now and more of a second chance at an opportunity missed. When Erasure’s debut single “Who Needs Love Like That” failed to make the Top 40 in 1985, I for one couldn’t understand why. They were a synth pop duo in an age when people loved synth pop duos, they had a damned catchy tune and it was a guaranteed club floor filler. At least it was at my choice of nightclub back in 1985, The Barn in Worcester. I think that would have been where I first heard the track probably.

It was rereleased in 1992, seven years and eighteen chart hits later to promote Andy and Vince’s first Best Of album “Pop! The First 20 Hits”. The title is a bit confusing. I’ve just said they’d had eighteen Top 40 hits to this point not twenty. The explanation is that the album includes the duo’s first three singles that were not hits but not the “Breath Of Life” remix which had its own chart entry in addition to the standard version. Just to add to the confusion, it actually had twenty-one tracks on it as the final one is the “Hamburg Remix” of “Who Needs Love Like That” which is the version that was rereleased in ‘92. Got all that? Good.

This is one of those live by satellite performances, this time from Broadway, New York. It doesn’t really work for me as it’s in an empty theatre and despite all the over the top costumes that Andy and Vince – who finally enters the fray two thirds through in full drag queen get up – are wearing, it all seems rather flat.

“Who Needs Love Like That (The Hamburg Remix)” peaked at No 10. Oh and I’m not sure what host Mark Franklin is on about when he says it got to No 82 on first release in ‘85. It was definitely No 55.

There’s a new No 1 as Boyz II Men ascend to the top spot with “End Of The Road”. I think this may be the third time this has been on the show and they’ve got another two weeks at No 1 after this so I’m struggling for anything else to say about it. OK well, clearly the dry ice machine has got stuck in top gear and the lads are still having issues with their wardrobes. More than that though, what’s going on with the ‘stand up sit down’ routine? All four members of the group start off sat down on stools but one by one get up for their individual turn in the spotlight. I get that the song was structured to include solo spots for the guys but what were the stools for? Why didn’t they just perform standing up? It reminds me of that old TV show Blind Date where the prospective daters are asked a question by the picker and each one gets up to perform their answer.

At the end of the performance, host Mark Franklin appears and is also wearing a baseball cap Boyz II Men style. When I first visited New York in 1994, I came back with a baseball cap as a souvenir. Soon afterwards, my mate Robin came to stay at our flat in Manchester. We were heading out for a drink and I donned my baseball cap at which point Robin refused to go any further with me until I took it off. “Sir, you’re an Englishman!” were his words of admonishment. He was probably right to be fair.

TOTP 16 AUG 1990

Here we are once more at TOTP Rewind, still back in the hot Summer of 1990, with a load of UK Top 40 hits to review. Before we get to those though, a bit of context about what else was happening outside of the charts at this time. Four days after this TOTP aired, the final ever episode of Miami Vice was shown on BBC1. Yes, the cop show that popularised the now iconic 80s fashion of no socks, rolled up sleeves, Ray-Ban sunglasses and of course designer stubble was finally put out to pasture after a run of five years, five seasons and 112 episodes. I hadn’t watched the show in years but I do recall tuning in for this final episode (well the last 10 minutes or so anyway).

Back in 1985, it had been a complete phenomenon making stars of its two leads Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas but it was its cultural impact that was the show’s legacy. The Miami Vice ‘look’ of pastel coloured T-shirt under jacket, white linen trousers, slip-on sockless loafers accessorised with shades and stubble may be rolled out these days as a fancy dress costume for an 80s themed party but back in the mid 80s it was genuinely influential. Sales of Ray Bans sunglasses soared and Macy’s even opened a Miami Vice section in its young men’s department. Designers such as Gianni Versace and Hugo Boss were consulted on the show’s fashion choices.

Then of course there was the music used in the series. Not for this show was the usual made for TV incidental music; oh no, the rights to actual, original pop and rock songs were purchased so that bona fide artists were featured. The range of artists employed was diverse; from Devo to Dire Straits and from U2 to Underworld. In the case of some acts, their involvement in the show was not restricted to just the inclusion of their musical output; stars from James Brown to Phil Collins via Sheena Easton also had acting parts. The series spawned two hit singles for Jan Hammer and three volumes of soundtrack albums. However, by the end of the 80s, it was starting to look tired and ratings had dropped. It was time to bow out as the 90s dawned.

And talking of pop songs that have been used in TV and film, tonight’s opening act are best known in the US for just that practice. Go West had not been seen anywhere in the vicinity of the UK Top 40 in nigh on five years since their last visit there with “Don’t Look Down – The Sequel” in their breakthrough year of 1985. Their second album had come out in 1987 to a less than enthusiastic reaction from the record buying public (none of the singles taken from it were hits) and despite touring with Tina Turner, they had been officially listed as missing in action since. An elongated and legally messy changing of record label in the US hadn’t helped matters.

And then, out of nowhere and looking every inch the 80s throwback anachronism, they were back! “King Of Wishful Thinking” was taken from the Pretty Woman soundtrack which was proving to be a goldmine for any artist lucky enough to have found their way onto it. Go West joined Natalie Cole, David Bowie and of course Roxette as acts that had benefited from its all reaching pulling power. How a past their sell by date UK pop act came to be on that record seemed to be a case of luck of the label. EMI released it and as the band’s US label, their executives got to hear the song’s demo and asked for it to be included. It’s actually used quite prominently in the film in the opening scene and titles. Of course, it wasn’t the first time their music had been included on a hit film soundtrack. Back in late ’85 they had contributed a song called “One Way Street” to the Rocky IV soundtrack but it never got an official single release on account of it being as dull as a daily briefing hosted by George Eustace.

“King Of Wishful Thinking” though was a horse of a different colour altogether. With its jaunty rhythm bouncing along pleasantly and its upbeat chorus, it was perfect for daytime airplay. Added to this were Peter Cox’s soulful vocals (for all they were very much seen as disposable pop, Cox’s voice always stood out) and they are to the fore in this live performance. Not to be outdone, his band partner Richard Drummie has turned up not just with their trademark singlet on but also in a pair of cycling shorts! Cox looks a bit nervous to be back in the spotlight but Drummie whoops it up with handclaps (and armpits!) a plenty.

The single’s popularity (No 8 in the US and No 18 over here) would lead to a successful comeback album two years later with the appropriately entitled “Indian Summer”.

Right, it’s that Ben Liebrand remix of “Englishman In New York” by Sting next. Still not sure quite how this remix came about but it remains one of Mr Sumner’s most well known songs I’m guessing. Now, sticking with the pop music in film / TV theme, this track was actually used in a film but it must be one of the most obvious uses of a song in cinematic history. It features in the 2009 film An Englishman In New York which is chronicles the years gay English writer Quentin Crisp spent in New York City. Crisp of course, was the subject matter of the song in the first place. Sting has had a few songs that featured in movies that have become chart hits. Back in 1982 he scored with “Spread a Little Happiness” from Brimstone & Treacle before repeating the trick 10 years later with “It’s Probably Me” from Lethal Weapon 3. By this point he was getting a taste for the movie soundtrack hit and just 12 months later he went to No 2 with “All for Love” (alongside Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart) from The Three Musketeers.

Now I wasn’t aware of this until now but Sting wasn’t the first artist to come up with a song with this title. Godley & Creme recorded “An Englishman In New York” back in 1979 and if you thought Sting’s video was intriguing, you ain’t seen nothin’ yet….

Now then, 1990 just got a little bit more interesting. I haven’t got the space in this one post to do justice to the whole story of The KLF or to be more precise, Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty and there is loads more to their back story that predates this moment but for many (including me) “What Time Is Love? (Live at Trancentral)” was our starting point. I was aware that they were the guys behind The Timelords and their No 1 hit “Doctorin’ the Tardis” back in 1988 but my knowledge of their The Justified Ancients of Mu Mu (The JAMs) pseudonym was sketchy at best.

As presenter Anthea Turner notes in her intro, “What Time Is Love?” had been a dance floor hit previous Summer but it was a very different beast to the one we were about to hear in 1990. The original release even had a different name (sort of) – “What Time Is Love? (Pure Trance Original)” with the bracketed part of the title giving a clue to the very different sound that it had. Part of the Drummond and Cauty long term strategy though was the model of reworking tracks into different genres and so “What Time Is Love?” was re-shaped from a trance anthem to a more mainstream version that allowed the duo to the enter the nation’s consciousness. Vocal samples and a new bassline were added alongside a rap and house rhythm and the track became the first entry in the ‘Stadium House Trilogy’ that Drummond and Cauty had envisaged. “What Time Is Love? (Live at Trancentral)” would peak at No 5 and by the end of the year, The KLF were on their way to becoming a phenomenon, the like of which the UK charts hadn’t seen since Frankie Goes To Hollywood (probably).

You can be sure that we’ll be seeing plenty more of The KLF in these TOTP repeats over the next few months.

“Wow! They were raving!” exclaims Anthea at the end of The KLF’s performance which is possibly the most excruciating thing any one has ever said whilst presenting a popular music show. The next act on could be described as ‘excruciating’ for many a viewer back then but they were certainly ‘popular’. “Tonight” was the sixth of eight Top 10 hits that New Kids On The Block would have in 1990 alone. Such was their fame and appeal in this year that the likes of Smash Hits magazine could guarantee huge sales by merely planting them on the front cover whilst the story inside could be so insubstantial as to hardly warrant the title ‘feature’. The whole NKOTB phenomenon must have been manna from heaven for the pop press. Huge sales for very little journalistic effort.

As for their ‘music’, well… most of it was absolutely dire but then I wasn’t a teenage girl so I was not the target audience. Most you say? You mean some of it wasn’t utter crud? Surely not?! Look, at least “Tonight” had something a little bit different about it to their usual candy floss, lowest common denominator pop shit that they peddled. I mean, I hated it at the time but if I had to (like life depended on it scenario) pick one of their songs it would be this one. Please don’t judge me. “Tonight” peaked at No 3.

Right, what’s Anthea on about now? The Blackburn rave organisation? Who? What’s that to do with “Hardcore Uproar” by Together? Well, it appears that she was on the money with this one. Here’s @TOTPFacts:

Yes, it seems Anthea was well prepped for this link. According to Suddi Raval in an interview with http://www.theransomnote.com, he was against “Hardcore Uproar” as a title and was pushing for it to be called “Can You Feel The Beat” which sounds so lame in comparison. The track got its biggest promotion when Paul Oakenfold agreed to play it as part of his set as the warm up at the legendary Stone Roses Spike Island gig when a crowd of 30,000 people (including my elder brother) got to hear it.

As for me, it sounds like “Ebeneezer Goode” by The Shamen performed by Utah Saints. Maybe it had some influence on those two acts? Maybe. Raval’s partner in the band Jon Donaghy was tragically killed a year after “Hardcore Uproar” was a hit in a road accident in Ibiza on the way to perform at a festival.

One of 1990’s breakout stars is back on the show with her biggest ever hit -it can only be Betty Boo and “Where Are You Baby”. There was lots of love for Betty on display on Twitter when this TOTP repeat aired last week. In stark contrast, there was a massive negative backlash on social media against Anthea Turner after her ill-advised Twitter rant that was accused of fat-shaming and ableism. Silly cow. Anyway, back to Betty and this is peak period Boo (peak-a-boo if you will) when she really did seem to have the pop world at her feet. “Where Are You Baby” was her third Top 10 hit on the spin (if you include her 1989 collaboration with The Beatmasters) and would eventually rise to No 3. Although very similar to previous hit “Doin’ The Do”, this one had a bit more musicality about it to my ears with the chorus sounding much more melodic. Above everything else though, it was damn catchy. Betty really channels her inner Emma Peel in this performance whilst the promo video with its sci-fi space imagery sees her cast herself as a cartoon-like of version of Barbarella. I was fine with either look to be fair!

Right, what’s the name of the next act Anthea? Unfortunately for Anthea, two one syllable words that are phonically similar proved too much for her presenting abilities and she cocks up introducing Jon Bon Jovi when she gets ‘Jon’ and ‘Bon’ the wrong way round! Come on! This is basic stuff for a presenter surely?

“Blaze Of Glory” was a Breaker last week and is up to No 13 this week and for those of us with even a passing familiarity with the Bon Jovi canon of work (and yes I was one), it seemed to be a wholly predictable culmination of a good few years obsession with cowboys on Jon’s behalf. Starting with “Wanted Dead Or Alive” from the “Slippery When Wet” album (originally the song that Emilio Estevz requested to be used in Young Guns II), Jon couldn’t let go of his Cowboys and Westerns theme and carried it forward to the band’s next album “New Jersey”. That album included songs with titles like “Stick To Your Guns” (opening line ‘So you want to be a cowboy’) and this one…

…give it a rest Jon!

Anyway, I read recently that there are plans afoot for a third instalment of the Young Guns franchise with screenwriter of the first two films John Fusco plus their stars Emilio Estevz and Lou Diamond Phillips on board. I’m not quite sure which direction the plot could plausibly go in given that just about all the characters for the first two films were killed off and Estevez and Diamond Phillips are now well into their 50s. Not so much ‘young guns’ then as ‘antique firearms’.

Another of last week’s Breakers now as we get a studio performance from Roxette of “Listen To Your Heart”. Last year, the BMI confirmed that this song has now been played on US radio more than 60 million times! If those 60 million plays were back to back, it would have been played non-stop for 62 years!

As with Go West earlier, whatever you might think of their musical output, it cannot be denied that they had a great singer. Marie Fredriksson belts this one out and then some. After the re-release success of “Listen To Your Heart”, EMI repeated the trick for the duo’s next single when they shoved “Dressed For Success” back out into the market where it peaked at No 18, some 30 places higher than its initial release.

The final week of four at the top for Partners In Kryme and “Turtle Power”. Now before we all start jumping around, throwing our arms in the air and offering thanks to the gods of the pop charts, know this….*SPOILER ALERT*…next week’s No 1 is Bombalurina!

1990 really was the height of Turtlemania so much so that the four dudes even made an appearance (alongside Partners In Kryme) at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party that year. As far as I can tell, they didn’t actually win anything per se although they did come 5th in the Best Single category and 3rd in the Worst Single category. Go figure.

The comments about the clip above on YouTube are scary. Here’s someone called Blue Jones:

“Dude! I am one of the biggest TMNT fans on earth. I’ve spent thousands of dollars on original art, comics & toys & I even have the fearsome foursome tattooed on my arm. And yet, I’ve never seen this video before! Yowza! Thanks for uploading this gem!”

WTF?! He even gets a reply from someone called Zwoob Zwoob:

“Same here bruh. except that tattoo part. but i did actually buy this replica of one of the original masks from the 1990 movie. (raph’s head). And even though I was only 2 when this movie came out, it’s my favorite, lol, i can literally recited the whole movie line for line.”

OK, I’m proper getting the fear now. Let’s dial it down with a comment from this poor, uniformed gentleman called MagicalPuddinPops:

“It’s weird I always thought mc hammer performed this.”

Farewell Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles…it’s been…awful actually.

Whilst 1990 hasn’t proved to be the antidote to the late 80s that I thought I remembered, bizarrely the play out song is the third single on this show to be featured in Gary Mulholland’s great book This Is Uncool: The 500 Greatest Singles Since Punk and Disco. Split into years, the section for 1990 features “Come Together” by Primal Scream along with The KLF and Betty Boo! The follow up to their breakthrough chart hit “Loaded”, this was very much cut from the same cloth albeit with a more conventional song structure than its predecessor. However….the album version on “Screamadelica” remixed by Andrew Weatherall was nothing like the Terry Farley 7″ mix. Clocking in at over 10 mins with Bobby Gillespie’ vocals completely omitted and replaced with samples of a speech by the Rev Jesse Jackson, it’s that version that was a huge hit in the clubs in Ibiza.

I actually own the CD single of this but I can’t claim that I bought it at the time. I got it as one of those import cut out titles from legendary Manchester record store Power Cuts. It’s got two versions of “Come Together” and three of “Loaded” on it plus “I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have” which was the original track that was remixed into “Loaded”. Not a bad little purchase.

In a Smash Hits feature that took a snoop around Bobby’s flat at the time, his record collection was spread across the floor and featured artists you could well have anticipated like The Rolling Stones, The Ramones, Sly and the Family Stone and Funkadelic. However, it also features “Hippychick” by Soho which wasn’t a hit in the UK until its re-release some six months after this article was published. Bobby Gillespie – a man all over trends before they’ve even happened. And his critics said he was just re-hashing The Rolling Stones. “Come Together” peaked at No 26.
